Development of an urethral catheter-probe prototype for the detection of prostate cancer using transluminal elastography.


The new transurethral elastography procedure is based on the transmission of shear waves and the detection of its echoes through the urethral wall. The rotational oscillation of a disk in contact with the urethral wall creates a pseudo-spherical pattern of shear waves that interacts with the tissue architecture. Echoes are created when the wavefront encounters an area of altered elasticity, such as tumors. This method of transmission minimizes the generation of undesired compressional waves. The echoes generated travel back to the urethra where they can be sensed. Information regarding the tumors, for instance, location, shape, size and viscoelastic properties, is encapsulated within the echoic signals. By solving the inverse problem of propagation that information can be extracted and used for detecting and diagnosing prostate cancer. The transurethral elastography probe uses an electromechanically driven disk emitter to generate an axisymmetric pattern of shear waves and an array of shear piezoelectric receivers to sense the echoes, in a similar fashion to that in the gynecological probe.
