Optimal medical device for neutron capture therapy of cancer and medical isotope production


We aim to develop the optimal neutron beam for the only external radiotherapy which is selective at cellular level (Boron Neutron Capture Therapy, BNCT) and, with the same facility, we can produce medical radioisotopes, guaranteeing the supply of those most demanded, and expanding the possibilities of nuclear medicine procedures.

With this medical device, a hospital will be able to:

– Treat tumors of bad prognosis, for which current treatments are not effective, with an improved version of a very promising experimental radiotherapy (BNCT), which is delivered in only one day.

– Reduce medical efforts and costs on patient care because of the strong healing effect of BNCT.

– Reduce costs on some medical isotopes for advanced therapies, as 177Lu.

– Guarantee the availability of common use radioisotopes as 99mTc, often compromised by nuclear reactors stops.

– New diagnostic PET procedures by using short half-life radioisotopes as 11C (reducing false positives/false negatives).

Current needs

This group has already up to three grants for tech development (Caixa Research, AECCInnova and ISCIII-DTS). It only needs a seed capital of about 300000 € for launching a UGR spin-off company for the commercialization and establishment of strategic allianses with accelerator manufacturers and biotech and pharma companies.
